December 26 in Bakersfield

Spotted a San Joaquin kit fox the other day.

Welcome to your weekly Bakersfield update! Today is Thursday, December 26, 2024.

In this week’s Bako Weekly:

  • 🎊 NYE events

  • 🚫 A restaurant closure

Short post today—wishing everyone a safe and happy New Year!

🌲 Is your Christmas tree already part of the family? Not sure what to do with it after the holidays? Cut it into small pieces to fit in your green waste container—just make sure the lid can close. You can also self-haul it to one of 23 drop-off locations in Kern County from December 26 to January 6, or compost it at home to enrich your soil.

Here’s what’s happening this week:

News

🚔 Bakersfield Police joined a statewide retail theft operation that led to 117 arrests, recovery of $38,000 in stolen goods, three stolen vehicles, and two illegal firearms.

⚖️ A man with six prior theft convictions became Kern County's first person charged under Prop 36, a new law targeting repeat theft offenders. He allegedly stole electric scooters worth $879 from Target. Arraigned on felony shoplifting, he’s held without bail.

🐾 An Arvin man admitted to sexually assaulting a neighbor’s dog after jumping a fence to retrieve a soccer ball. He’s charged with animal sexual assault and trespassing.

🍴 The owners of La Mina Cantina have announced they’ll be closing both locations by the end of the year. Stop by one last time before December 31.
