November 7 in Bakersfield

Photo taken by me last week.
Welcome to your weekly Bakersfield update! Today is Thursday, November 7, 2024.
In this week’s Bako Weekly:
🐕️ Pets
🚲️ Pedestrian & bicyclist safety
🩸 Blood for pizza
🌿 A new dispensary
At last, no more political mail or YouTube ads… at least for a while.
With the colder weather, residents are wondering why there’s no winter menudo & pozole cook-off this time of year. If one pops up, I’ll definitely be there!
And that sky yesterday—dust everywhere from the strong winds. Hope those working outdoors had some respiratory protection.

Here’s what’s happening this week:
News
🌳 A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held this afternoon for Bakersfield’s newest park, Linnell-Brahma Park, near Brahma Street and Linnell Way in southeast Bakersfield. This marks the city’s 65th park.
🗑️ Got bulky waste? The City of Bakersfield is hosting a bulky waste collection event this Saturday to dispose of furniture, mattresses, box springs, and other eligible items at Bakersfield Sports Village.
🐈️ A mega adoption event is happening this Saturday, hosted by city and county shelters along with other organizations. Meet adoptable dogs, cats, and more—some of whom are at risk due to shelter overcrowding. Enjoy low-cost pet vaccines, spay/neuter services, a kid zone, petting zoo, and more.
🌿 A dispensary recently opened in McFarland with hopes to contribute to city growth. Part of its proceeds will be reinvested into McFarland, funding city improvements like new roads and buildings. Off the Charts is one of the few cannabis retailers in Kern County, which only permits commercial cannabis sales in cities like California City, Arvin, and McFarland due to local ordinances.
🚸 The City of Bakersfield is seeking resident feedback on ways to make streets safer for pedestrians and bicyclists. You can share your input using an online interactive map and complete a survey available under the tabs. Personally, adding bike paths along canals sounds like a great idea.
⚠️ A shelter-in-place order was issued Wednesday morning for a large area east of Taft after a chemical leak was reported. No leak was found, and the order was lifted. If you’re ever in a gas leak zone, remember to close all doors and windows, turn off ventilation systems, and avoid igniting any flames.
🛒 Amazon has expanded its same-day delivery service to Bakersfield, allowing residents to order groceries from FoodMaxx and Save Mart for quick delivery.
